Preparing children for school

The best start for school begins with Partou

Starting primary school is important milestone for both children and families and at Partou, we provide a warm, nurturing environment where your child builds confidence, independence, and friendships—ensuring they are truly ready for school.

At Partou pre-schools, preparing children for school is about so much more than reading, writing, numbers and academic skills— it’s about physical development, healthy routines, growing independence, and the ability to form strong relationships, as well as fostering a life-long love for learning. By focusing on these key areas, we can help children feel confident and excited as they begin their journey into school life which makes for a smoother transition for both children and families.

How we help children prepare for “big” school

Our Partou curriculum is scientifically backed and playfully delivered. Children explore, create and problem solve in open-ended ways to build confidence, resilience and have fun.

It’s a common misconception that attending a pre-school attached to a school leads to better early learning outcomes. However, all Early Years settings, including Partou pre-schools, follow the same statutory early years educational framework as primary school pre-schools which continues into the first year of Reception. This aims to support children in achieving their Early Learning Goals before they move into Key Stage 1. Learning at this age is led through play, as this is how children learn best. The difference lies in how each setting delivers its curriculum and supports children to work towards these goals.

Our individualised, child-led approach means that early year’s learning goes hand in hand with curiosity and exploration. This empowers children to pursue interests deeply and at their own pace with the support of our practitioners to foster the very best learning outcomes for each child as an individual.

Nurturing children’s confidence and social skills

Confidence and social skills are an important part of school readiness as they help children to securely navigate the next steps in their early years’ education.

At Partou, we help little minds grow big through play. Children are free to explore, create and solve problems in open ended ways. We encourage children to develop their teamwork skills, practice sharing through turn taking and cooperation and develop emotional resilience by encouraging them to ask for help when they need it.

Encouraging independence and self-care

We support school readiness by helping children and families feel confident in self-care. This builds independence and strengthens children’s belief in their own abilities.

This includes encouraging children to dress themselves, use cutlery, drink from an open cup, use the toilet confidently, and follow simple routines. We also help children learn to look after their personal belongings, supporting a growing sense of responsibility as they prepare for big school.

Supporting physical development

In preparation for the transition to primary school, Partou nurseries and pre-schools support physical development by encouraging fine and gross motor skills through hands on activities.

This helps strengthen children’s muscles and coordination, building the foundations for early writing as they begin to write at school.

Enhancing communication and language skills

We nurture children’s communication and language skills through talking, listening and storytelling. Books play an important role in our early years’ curriculum and we enjoy sharing stories, books and rhymes to support the development of these important skills throughout the whole of nursery life and our pre-schools as a part of holistic approach to school readiness.

How Partou support transitions to “big” school

We understand that the transition from pre-school to school is an emotional milestone, for both children and families. Ensuring that children are properly prepared for the move to primary school is an important step in this transition which Partou pre-schools do by:

  • Familiarising children with school routines and experiences through books, role play, and discussion about going to school.
  • Providing opportunities to explore school-related items in the home corner, such as school uniforms, book bags, and stationery.
  • Creating personalised photo books with images of the child’s future school, classrooms, teachers, and uniform where possible, to help children feel confident and familiar with the new environment.
  • Inviting teachers into the nursery to meet the child and observe them in a familiar setting, promoting a smooth and supportive transition.
  • Inviting families to a school transition meeting, so there is an opportunity to discuss any support we can give to support you through this transition.

These activities aim to build children’s confidence, independence, and familiarity with their next stage of learning, while also encouraging families to engage with the process to make this smoother for all.
