Ofsted praises Partou Stockwood Lane for its thoughtful curriculum, effective teaching and strong safeguarding culture. Discover what impressed the inspector.

Partou Stockwood Lane Day Nurery & Pre-school receives Strong Standard in two areas in latest Ofsted inspection December 2025

A Bristol nursery where children “settle well and arrive with enthusiasm to get involved in the range of interesting and stimulating activities that staff plan for them” has been praised by the regulator.

In her final report, the Ofsted inspector describes the safeguarding culture at Partou Stockwood Lane Day Nursery and Pre-school as “open and positive.” She adds: “Children’s wellbeing and welfare are paramount to staff and leaders.”

Ofsted recently changed the way early years settings are graded, replacing the previous single-word judgements with a new framework that focuses on safeguarding and six other evaluation areas: inclusion; curriculum and teaching; achievement; behaviour, attitudes and establishing routines; children’s welfare and wellbeing; and leadership and governance.

Safeguarding standards at Partou Stockwood Lane were judged to be ‘met’ with the nursery achieving ‘strong standard’ or ‘expected standard’ across all evaluation areas.

Situated close to the town centre and within easy reach of the A37, Partou Stockwood provides high quality childcare and education for children up to the age of five.

Its eye-catching indoor playrooms, filled with resources made from recycled or real-life items, are complemented by a large outdoor area with its own allotment and dedicated spaces for children to learn.

The inspector observes that team members at the setting “place a very strong emphasis on independence” and “follow children’s lead and take opportunities as they arise to extend children’s learning.”

She writes: “Children benefit from effective teaching. Staff consider children’s individual needs and interests alongside what they can already do. They use this information to plan for what children need to learn next. Staff offer individualised support to help children to continually progress. The curriculum is thoughtfully planned to address any gaps in children’s experiences and ensure that they are well prepared for school.”

Her report praises the “strong leadership team in place” at Partou Stockwood which has been “extremely proactive.”   She continues: “Staff supervision is a high priority for leaders. They provide excellent support for all staff, based on observations of their practice, self-appraisal and discussion. This sharp attention to staff’s ongoing development ultimately enhances the quality of interactions and support children receive.”

The inspector notes that team members “work extremely closely with parents and carers to build strong relationships with them and their children,” adding: “This helps staff to get to know children as individuals from the start and helps to ensure that they offer a continuity of care and meet each child’s individual needs.”

The Ofsted report concludes: “Staff are good role models to children and teach them about the rules and expectations. Children understand what is expected of them and behave well.”

Paige Biddle-Gulliver, Partou Stockwood Lane Nursery Manager, said:

“We strive to create a ‘home from home’ environment for the children, providing the perfect atmosphere for them to settle and learn.”

“It is really pleasing to see that the importance of the relationships we have established with the families, as a means of further enhancing the children’s development, is highlighted in the report.”

Samantha Rhodes, Partou Managing Director, said:

“Congratulations to Paige and her team on the outcome of the inspection.”

“Partou Stockwood is a little different than many nurseries because of its use of recycled and real-life items in each room, believing that authentic treasures open up children’s imagination and help them to develop key foundational skills.”

“It is clearly an approach that works.”
